Overcast or Whipped Stitch:

The stitch is usually worked from right to left.  Make slanted stitches about 1/8" deep and 1/16" to 1/8" apart, depending on the size of the project.
Running or Gathering Stitch:

Insert needle in and out of fabric in a straight or curved line at regular intervals.
French knots:

1 - Come up at A.  Twist the thread lightly once around the needle.  2 - Return the needle into the same hole, draw the thread tight and push the needle through.  3 - Finished effect.  To vary size of knot, wrap two or more threads around the needle.
Couching Stitch:

1 - Lay threads along the line to be worked.  With one thread in the needle, come up at A, then down at B (B is almost in the same hole as A).  2 - Come up at C, about ¼" from A-B, then go down at D.  Continue, holding threads taut with left hand as you sew.  3 - At the end of the line, thread the threads into a large-eyed needle, plunge them though fabric in hole made by last couching stitch.  Cut the threads short (about ¼") on wrong side.
Chain Stitch:

1 - Come up at A.  2 - Replace needle in the same hole at A, forming a loop.  Come up at B, inside the loop and draw flat.  3 - Repeat, always going down inside each previous loop.

Blanket or Button Hole Stitch:

1 - Come up at A, go down at B, come up at C, looping thread under needle.  2) -Continue, always keeping needle vertical.  3) - When working stitches close together, do not crowd.  Loops should lie flat.  Rows may be worked from right to left or left to right
