Craft Tales
Sewing Skill Level

The sewing skills needed to complete the projects in Craft Tales are determined using the criteria below.  In many instances, a project will be within the ability of a lower skill group except for one or two steps.  When this occurs, I rate the project for the lower skill with a note in the instructions on how to sew the more difficult procedure by hand.

Beginner:  Able to comfortably guide the sewing machine around curves as well as accurately straight stitch.  Can work with woven fabrics.

Knows the basic sewing terms.  Can hand sew basic construction stitches.

Can read, understand and follow general sewing instructions.

Intermediate:  Is experienced and adept at handling the sewing machine in more difficult maneuvering, such as easing two pieces of different length fabrics together.  Can work with woven fabrics, knits and biases.

Has a broader knowledge of sewing terms and is able to implement them.  Can hand sew basic construction and permanent invisible stitches.

Can read and understand a longer more difficult series of sewing instructions and follow the instructions to their conclusion.

Advanced:  Has a lot of experience and is able to achieve about any sewing task on the sewing machine.  Is able to work in small cramped spaces and maintain accurate seams.  Can work with all fabrics, including matching plaids and one way designs and naps.

Has a broad knowledge and experience of the majority of sewing terms and is able to identify and use them without difficulty. Can do fine hand sewing.

Can read, interpret and complete complicated instructions and new sewing designs and concepts.
